Ricky Groves Is Out Of Strictly Come Dancing 2009

Actor Ricky Groves is the tenth celebrity to be voted off the seventh series of Strictly Come Dancing.

In week 10 of the competition, the remaining celebrity contestants and their professional dance partners took to the floor to perform a variety of dances. Ricky Groves and Erin Boag

Ricky's tango didn't impress the judges; he scored only 22 points and ended up at the bottom of the leader board.

The combination of the judges' scores and viewers’ votes left him and professional partner Erin Boag in the bottom two and facing the dance off with former Footballers' Wives actress Laila Rouass and her partner Anton du Beke.

Making their decision on who to save, the judges all voted unanimously for Laila and so Ricky's Strictly dream ended.

What did you think of tonight's show? Has the right person gone out? We'd love to hear from you so please have your say in the comments section below.

(Our thanks to the ever brilliant Miss Bubbles for doing the live blog – you can read her comments in the previous post. I particularly liked her comment about Erin's dress - hilarious and totally spot on)

Here is our full recap of the show:

The judges’ scores
Here are the scores for each dance:

Ricky and Natalie – 36

Ali and Brian – 35

Chris and Ola – 29

Laila and Anton – 29

Natalie and Vincent – 26

Ricky and Erin – 22

Jade Johnson was injured and decided not to dance so she is out of the show.

And here are the comments on each performance:

Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna – foxtrot

Brucie: What about that? They all loved it. What a start to the show.

Our view: Not her best but still very good.

Blogger’s wife: Ali’s dress looks like they have re-used Natalie’s foxtrot dress although it looks better on Ali. It was well-danced but it didn’t wow me.

Judge Alesha: A beautiful opening to the show, you are a dream couple. Elongate that stride on the back step but for me you are the front runners.

Judge Bruno: Yes you have the ability to produce moments of sheer bliss. It was fantastic but sometimes you still tighten up a little bit. You’re so good you can be even better.

Judge Craig: I saw your nerves for the first time. There was one sticky moment you stepped on Brian’s left toe also. But it was a very polished and gorgeous routine.

Head judge Len: If that was pudding it was an Angel Delight. Very, very nice, it was great.

8 9 9 9 = 35

Natalie Cassidy and Vincent Simone – samba

Brucie: What about it? Lovely, my darling

Our view: Oh dear. That just wasn’t very good, was it?

Blogger’s wife: Lovely to see Natalie’s hair down it made the dress suit her much better. Who stole Vincent’s trousers and left him with tracksuit bottoms? Probably the same person who stole their samba bounce.

Judge Craig: I was watching your mouth it was like a big old venus fly trap. The routine was just OK, lacked bounce and a bit lame. However, you are completely and utterly endearing and very watchable.

Head judge Len: I was looking at the feet and was a pity you messed up your contra botafogos. For me it was all in hold and because of that it lost any exuberance. It was like a gr

Judge Alesha: A lot of fun, colour and sparkle. I do agree with some of the points Craig made. Keep your head up.

Judge Bruno: Natalie, I love you but this was more Bournemouth than Brazil. It was one of your poorest performances.

6 7 8 5 = 26

Chris Hollins and Ola Jordan – Viennese waltz

Brucie: Is this beginning to be easier than football?

Our view: It was slow and had no fleckerl. I don’t think they should be playing so safe at this stage of the competition.

Blogger’s wife: I quite enjoyed watching that. I did notice a lack of a fleckerl but it was good.

Judge Bruno: better, Chris, better. You are starting to control yourself. You led with confidence.

Judge Craig: It was a little tight of shoulder and you’re wearing that tension on your face. You need to smile.

Head judge Len: You came out with confidence, great rhythm, every time you pivoted everyone was up on their feet.

Judge Alesha: I don’t need to see so many pivots in one dance. I didn’t feel the romance. Your facial expression was a bit clinical.

7 8 7 7 = 29

Ricky Whittle and Natalie Lowe – American smooth

Brucie: Absolutely wonderful.

Our view: Spectacular. So good to watch.

Blogger’s wife: It was a completely show-stopping lift. Fantastic to watch. However, I agree with Len that it didn’t go with the rest of the routine.

Head judge Len: I thought the whole number was absolutely gorgeously fantastic. Why did you do that stupid great big lift? It was incongruous.

Judge Alesha: I think every woman would like to have the opportunity to be lifted up like that. It shows a lot of trust. It was gentle, it was understated, it absolutely beautiful, it was a show stopper.

Judge Bruno: Oh Ricky, the romantic soul with the strength of Samson. You picked the slow foxtrot it exposes everything but it was a fantastic performance.

Judge Craig: The amalgamations you created were absolutely exquisite. You are the first celeb man to lead and give it some swing and sway. The lift, however, I loved.

9 8 10 9 = 36

Laila Rouass and Anton du Beke – waltz

Brucie: That was beautiful.

Our view: Under the circumstances she’s done very well but it won’t trouble the top of the judges’ leader board.

Blogger’s wife: Beautiful dance, beautiful dress.

Judge Bruno: You made a mistake there and your posture wasn’t that good but the rest was beautiful.

Judge Craig: I didn’t feel you were entirely following Anton. I don’t think it was your best dance but I have to say a miraculous recovery.

Head judge Len: Some of the finesse parts weren’t there. However, having that said I thought you came out and did spectacularly well

Judge Alesha: I did have higher expectations. Your posture isn’t quite right. You remembered the routine but I still want to see you work a little bit harder, Laila.

6 8 7 8 = 29

Ricky Groves and Erin Boag – tango

Brucie: Come on, now. I think Erin is pleased with you

Our view: Bizarre purple fringing on Erin’s dress. And the dance was no better.

Blogger’s wife: I thought they had a lot of good attitude in the dance. I'm speechless about Erin's dress. I like the colour but that's about it.

Head judge Len: Unfortunately Ricky knows there were too may mistakes. He kept going wrong and you can’t do that.

Judge Alesha: I would have scored you higher with those little mistakes. You did try to sell the dance.

Judge Bruno: When you go that wrong what can you do except get to the end of the routine?

Judge Craig: Mistakes galore. It was sterile and mechanical all the way through.

Brucie: You’re my favourites.

5 6 6 5 = 22

The dance-off
After the viewers’ votes were added to the judges’ leader board Ricky and his dance partner Erin and Laila and her dance partner Anton were left in the bottom two and faced the drama of the dance-off.

The judges voted as follows:

Judge Craig: Laila and Anton

Judge Alesha: Laila and Anton

Judge Bruno: Laila and Anton

Head judge Len’s casting vote was not needed. He said he would have voted for Laila and Anton.

So out went Ricky and Erin.

What do you think of the show? Did the right couple get eliminated?

Live blog: Strictly Come Dancing 2009 week 10 Saturday

Hello all! I'm Miss Bubbles from MSN's soap blog, A Slice Of Soap. Hope you're all enjoying this live blog. I'm here until the end of the series. Strictly blogger Matt Ball will follow later with a detailed recap of tonight's show and he's also on Twitter so follow him here.

This is a live blog so Press F5 to refresh your screen and keep up with all the latest happenings. Feel free to leave comments at any time throughout the show...

Brucie's feeling better so he'll be back and there's only Dame Shirley Bassey to look forward to! Wow! Somebody's dancing their last dance tonight. Question is who? We'll find out soon...

Show kicks off:

Bruce Forsyth is back and here comes Tess. She's in an off-the-shoulder beige dress that fits her like a glove. And here we go - yes, Tess gets her leg over Bruce! There's a shot of the people in the audience. How exciting to see The Fonz! Henry Winkler is here to do panto again - he's got the panto bug it seems. There's Chris Moyles too.

Bruce's opening joke is so bad, I just might get sick. Oh well, it wouldn't be Strictly without them. I've just seen Erin's dress and it's an overload of purple fringe - she looks like something out of Sesame Street. Natalie's wearing yet another unflattering dress.

Breaking news: Jade Johnson's out of the competition due to injury. So sad but not surprising really.

Ali & Brian - foxtrot

I just love Ali's dress and this routine is lovely. She looks so graceful on the dance floor. This isn't over-complicated, every move flows. A nice way to start the show.

Judge's comments: Alesha said: "A beautiful opening to the show... you made a difficult dance look easy."

Judges' total score: 35

Natalie & Vincent – samba

You can't go wrong with Madonna and this week they're dancing to one of my favourites: Holiday. I'm not too sure about that pink frilly number that Nat's wearing - it doesn't flatter her at all. Have to say, Nat's looking a bit lethargic tonight - there's no vitality or enthusiam to the routine. This is meant to be a samba, but it's slower than the foxtrot she danced last week.

Judges' comments:  Alesha said: "A lot of fun, colour, sparkle. However it could have had more bounce... you did a good job."

Judges' total score: 26

Chris & Ola – Viennese waltz

It's romance time now. The song is A New Day Has Come by Celine Dion. I do like Chris, he's such an entertaining little bundle of enthusiasm. He's got a real intense look on his face and I think he should relax a bit more. This is a nice steady routine but I know he can do better.

Judges' comments:  Alesha said: "I didn't feel the romance... your facial expression was a bit clinical."

Judges' total score: 29

Ricky W & Natalie – American smooth

It's the song that Judy Garland made famous, Somewhere Over The Rainbow. But it's the version that the late Eva Cassidy sung - which I love. Rick and Nat are doing some beautiful moves: slow, graceful, romantic. They make a beautiful couple and it's all flowing beautifully to the music. Right at the end, here's comes the lifts and I hope he doesn't... it's OK! They made it. I'm not sure if I liked the lifts.

Judges' comments: Alesha said: "I think every woman would like the opportunity to be lifted like that... it was a show stopper!" However, Len hated the lifts. Absolutely HATED the lifts. On the other hand, Craig loved them. The two judges have a go at each other and Len calls Craig "a doughnut". Craig says Len is: "D-U double L dull!"

Judges' total score: 36

Laila & Anton – waltz

Laila looks beautiful tonight. She seems to have recovered quite well from her ankle injury. The routine is... well, routine really. Nothing special about it at all which is very strange considering that Anton's strength is ballroom.

Judges' comments: Alesha said: "I want to see you work a little bit harder. Show us what you're made of."

Judges' total score:29

Ricky G & Erin – tango

Oooh it's Prince's You've Got The Look! I'm seeing the video with Sheena Easton. Remember that? I don't think this is a great song for a tango. I hate what Erin's wearing (she looks like a purple version of Rod Hull's Emu) and I hate the routine. Ricky's making mistake after mistake and he'll definitely be in the dance off.

Judges' comments:  Alesha said: "If it wasn't for the mistakes, I would have scored you higher."

Judges' total score: 22

My favourite celeb tonight:
I didn't really have an outstanding favourite. It felt like everyone was going through the motions. I'll choose Ali Bastian.

My least favourite celeb: Ricky Groves. He made far too many mistakes and I hated the routine.

OK so everyone's danced now. A VT is rolling to remind us what we've seen and it's also time for a routine from the professional dancers.

The professional dancers Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova are now performing a swing routine to Wild Young Hearts by the Noisettes. Lovely, lively stuff. The judges are now talking about the dances for next week: it's gonna be the 1920s with a charleston and 1950s rock n roll. Great! Looking forward to that.

Time for the professional dancers again - this time performing a gorgeous rumba to Madonna's Frozen. But I'm waiting for Dame Shirley Bassey. And here she is at last! The legendary diva (as in, fantastic female singer - not a stroppy madam like some American singers I could name). Dame Shirley performs her new single This Time written by Gary Barlow from Take That. Oh wow! Her voice is still as strong as ever (she should really think about covering her arms though - bingo wings Dame Shirley - I still love you though). That was just FANTASTIC!

The Dance-off

We're about to find out who's through to the next round of the competition. Here we go: Chris is through... so is Ali..... and Ricky Whittle.... It's Ricky Groves and Laila Rouass in the dance-off. Oh my goodness. Here we go again!

Laila to dance first and she's doing really well. My money's on her staying in the competition. She'd have to mess up really badly to go instead of Ricky Groves.

Next up is Ricky Groves... he's got to improve tremendously on his last perfromance or he's out. Nope. Looks like he's going home tonight.

Here we go....

The Judges' Decisions

Craig saves Laila

Alesha saves Laila

Bruno saves Laila

Ricky's out!

It's academic, but Len would've saved Laila too.

And that's a wrap! What did you think of tonight's show? Has the right person gone out? We'd love to hear from you so please have your say. That's it from me, I'm out of here. Join MSN's Strictly blogger Matt Ball for his full recap of tonight's show. I'll be back next week for another live blogging session.

Goodnight from Miss Bubbles.

Strictly 2009 week ten preview

Week 10 of Strictly Come Dancing 2009 is nearly here.

Here is what you need to know about Saturday’s programme:

What’s the format for this weekend?

There are seven couples left in. Each is performing a different dance except for Jade Johnson who will most likely do the tango she would have performed last weekend were it not for her injury. That assumes Jade will dance at all. She may not have recovered in time.

The two couples with lowest scores from a combination of judges' points and viewers’ votes will then face each other in a dance-off with the judges voting to save one of the couples. The other couple will leave the show.

The BBC’s blurb adds: “The professional dancers provide the entertainment with another sensational performance and Dame Shirley Bassey sings a show-stopping number.”

Who’s performing which dance?

  • Ricky G and Erin – tango
  • Chris and Ola – Viennese waltz
  • Ali and Brian – foxtrot
  • Natalie and Vincent – samba
  • Laila and Anton – waltz
  • Ricky W and Natalie – American smooth
  • Jade and Ian – tango

When is the show on TV?

Saturday 21 November 2009
6:50pm to 8:20pm BBC One.

This year you can watch in high-definition on the BBC HD channel – available subscription-free on Freesat. For more information go to: www.freesat.co.uk

What coverage will this blog be providing?

We will be doing live coverage on this blog – the one and only Miss Bubbles will be in the hot seat for that so join her on Saturday night as the show starts. Once the show ends I get busy writing my usual full review of the night including blogger’s wife’s all important opinions on the dresses.

Do join in the discussion by using the comments section – as ever we love to read your views.

Who’s going to be eliminated?

Yes, it is time for my ever-reliable prediction. Last week I predicted Craig Kelly would be eliminated, which he was. I also predicted Laila Rouass would be in the dance-off, which she wasn’t; she was the last celeb to be announced as safe before Craig and Ricky Groves went into the dance-off. Close but no cigar.

At the time of writing the William Hill website offers the following odds for the outright winner of the show:

Ricky Whittle 4/6
Ali Bastian 2/1
Chris Hollins 10/1
Jade Johnson 14/1
Laila Rouass 16/1
Natalie Cassidy 25/1
Ricky Groves 50/1

This week I predict Jade Johnson will not dance and Laila Rouass will lose in the dance-off to Ricky Groves.

Do you agree? Have your say now.

It Takes Two review – Thursday 19 November 2009

The show opened with the latest training hours.

I write “latest” but they would most likely refer to the end of Wednesday.

Anyway, here we go:

Couple Hours trained
Ali and Brian 13.5
Ricky G and Erin 13
Chris and Ola 12
Natalie and Vincent 11
Ricky W and Natalie 10.5
Laila and Anton 1

What no Jade Johnson? Well, there’ll be an announcement about her tomorrow.

And that’s not a typing mistake, Laila and Anton have managed only one hour so far due to her injury.

First on were Natalie Cassidy and Vincent Simone.

Natalie had not expected to stay in the show this long so she is now back on set filming EastEnders. That has led to her and Vincent missing a day’s training for their samba. “I don’t want to moan,” she said. “I’m lucky to have two jobs at the moment.” Fair enough.

Head judge Len’s masterclass was quite amusing. He and Winkleman attempted to recreate a move from James Jordan and Cherie Lunghi’s rumba from series six.

With hilarious consequences.

Last on were Lilia Kopylova, Darren Bennett and Flavia Cacace.

Winkleman asked them each to name their best moment of the series. Here’s what they said:

Flavia – Chris and Ola’s rumba. “One of the best of rumbas I’ve seen and for week one it was incredible.”

Lilia – Ricky Whittle and Natalie’s quickstep. “Everything about it was brilliant.”

Darren – well, that left him with Ali and Brian’s Viennese waltz, right? Wrong. He said his best moment was “any time the celebrity says how much they love the show; it makes the whole week worth it.”

A nice sentiment to end the show.

It Takes Two review – Wednesday 18 November 2009

First on Wednesday’s it Takes Two were Chris Hollins and Ola Jordan.

Chris said that ever since judge Bruno had referred to his paso doble foot stamping as “a child having a tantrum” people have been coming up to him and repeating Bruno’s phase at him. As ever he said it all with such good grace.

They’re doing the Viennese waltz this week. Chris admitted: “I have failed to embrace it. I have found it really difficult.”

Winkleman asked him: “Are you going to the final?”

Chris replied: “To watch?”

Then there was a fun section called The Len Commandments in which head judge Len Goodman delivered unto us his list of five things Strictly couples should comply with:

1. Thou shalt keep on time

2. Thou shalt not do lifts

3. Thou must have chemistry

4. Thou shalt have co-ordination

5. Thou shalt entertain

Then we were given the all-important Jade Johnson injury update which I would summarise as: she’s still injured.

Next up was the ever-improving media man James Jordan.

Before he reviewed some early mid-week training footage Winkleman asked him about injuries by reminding him that Ola once broke his nose during a dance performance. “I had to pop it back in,” said James.

Here is a summary of his comments:

Ali and Brian – foxtrot. James is concerned about her posture.

Natalie and Vincent – samba. Natalie needs to use her legs like springs to get that samba bounce.

Ricky Groves and Erin – tango. Ricky will be able to get into character and sell it well.

Chris and Ola – Chris doesn’t look like he’s enjoying the dance.

Ricky Whittle and Natalie – foxtrot American smooth. Very good, James could find only one mistake in it.

Then there were some answers to forum questions. I am unconvinced by this section as a regular item although it was interesting to learn that Erin likes fish finger sandwiches.

Last on were Laila Rouass and Anton du Beke. So far they have managed to train for just one hour this week on their waltz due to Laila’s injury.

She felt she had to dance last Saturday because of all the support she has had thus far. She added she felt guilty about two other couples ending up in the dance-off.

Ah, Strictly can be cruel sometimes, can’t it?

It Takes Two review – Tuesday 17 November 2009

An uncomplicated show on Tuesday. Here are the highlights:

No messing about at the start – head judge Len would be proud. Straight away Winkleman revealed that Jade Johnson has been told by the doctor that she can’t dance…for now. There will be updates as the week goes on but I think we can say it’s not looking good for Jade.

Ricky Groves and Erin Boag, the couple the judges saved in the dance-off, were first on. Erin said she had been expecting to lose but then saw Phil’s mistakes and thought they had a chance.

They’re doing the tango this week. Erin said: “It is going to be his best dance yet.”

Winkleman wisely pointed out that they haven’t had a score of 30 or higher so far. Erin replied: “When we deserve a 30 we’ll get a 30,” which gives a lot of credibility to the judges’ scores.

Ricky piped up: “Didn’t Julian Clary get to the final without getting a 30?”

Next up was Karen Hardy in Choreography Corner.

She said the number of injuries was not all that surprising at this stage of the competition. The celebs get tired, she said, and as a result get distracted which leads to injuries becoming more likely.

Karen said the two dances most likely to produce injuries were the jive (pounding) and the quickstep (high energy).

She commented on some of the performances from last Saturday night:

Ali and Brian – she loved Ali’s hip action in that cha cha cha and Brian did a great job of using Ali’s ability in that area during the routine.

Chris and Ola – they excelled in pas doble shaping (mirroring each other’s arm action – or “armography” as judge Craig now calls it) but when Chris was on his own he had a straight body whereas it should have been curved. The result was a lot of stamping instead of using his heel properly. This effectively means Karen agreed with judges Craig and Bruno’s assessment of Chris’ performance.

Natalie and Vincent – Karen pointed out the contra-body moves (bodies stay together but feet move away from partner).

Ricky Whittle and Natalie – Ricky should have been the leader but he looked like he was the follower, she said. “He’s trying to catch her up all the time,” Karen added. In her view the choreography was not great because there was so much stopping and starting. Natalie Lowe, take note.

Then there was a set of clips about what is now labelled Terrible Tuesdays, the day that appears to be the most difficult when picking up a new routine each week. Effectively, the celebs are going through the early stages of a typical learning curve but that doesn’t make quite as good TV as calling it Terrible Tuesdays.

Last on were three Strictly celebrity fans who were primed and ready with their sound bites:

Lionel Blair adored Ricky Whittle’s quickstep.

Lionel got a ticket to be in the audience last Saturday whereas I did not. Who does more to promote the show every year, I wonder?

Vanessa Feltz – Natalie Cassidy is “a bubbly overflowing fountain of joy”.

Russell Grant – loved Brian and Ali’s Viennese waltz. “I dissolved. I was like a small Alka Seltzer.”

And that was that.

It Takes Two Review – Monday November 16 2009

A quick overview of Monday’s show:

The behind-the-scenes of Saturday’s show featured the costume department’s work.

Eliminated couple Phil Tufnell and Katya Virshilas turned up to take their final bow. Katya said she knew they were on their way out.

Phil did his slightly clueless impression thing (or maybe it’s for real) by asking whether the judges base their dance-off verdict on the dance-off or on the performance earlier in the evening.

Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna were also on the show. The It Takes Two editors came up with a Fame or Fortuna thing – probably because Ali wore leg warmers.

Judge Craig Revel Horwood was also on the show. Note to the other judges: we know you’re busy and out of the country and all but if you’d like to turn up occasionally to give us your comments, please do. And Tess, if you fancy putting in an appearance you’d also be welcome, just remember to tell Ronnie Corbett there’s a height exclusion, like on the rides at Alton Towers.

Judge Craig said his verdict on the dance-off (he voted to save Ricky Groves and Erin Boag) was based on a mistake Phil and Katya made at the start of the routine which was not caught on camera. He added that if he were judging on past performance or potential he would have saved to Phil not Ricky.

OK, that’s it.

Full disclosure: blogger’s wife watched this episode of the show, I didn’t (for reasons I can’t go into right now – which will intrigue some of you. Well, OK, probably just a few of you. Well, OK, probably nobody). This blog post is therefore based entirely on blogger’s wife telling me what happened. She’s good like that, you know.

Phil Tufnell Is Out Of Strictly Come Dancing 2009

Former cricketer Phil Tufnell was knocked out of Strictly Come Dancing series seven after losing to Ricky Groves in the week nine dance-off.

In an extraordinary show Jade Johnson did not dance on medical advice after an accident in rehearsal. Laila Rouass was also injured before the show started but was cleared to dance by the doctor and chose to do so but she could not complete her rumba routine due to being in so much pain.Phil Tufnell and Katya Virshilas

Jade, it appears, will be allowed to dance next week.

The judges’ scores
After the judges’ scores from Friday night and Saturday night had been added together the leader board looked like this:

Ricky and Natalie – 35

Ali and Brian – 35

Natalie and Vincent – 34

Phil and Katya – 31

Chris and Ola – 30

Ricky and Erin – 29

Laila and Anton – 22

The dance-off
After the viewers’ votes were added to the judges’ leader board Ricky and his dance partner Erin and Phil and his dance partner Katya were left in the bottom two and faced the drama of the dance-off.

The judges voted as follows:

Judge Craig: Ricky and Erin

Judge Alesha:  Phil and Katya

Judge Bruno:  Phil and Katya

Head judge Len (casting vote): Ricky and Erin

So out went Phil and Katya.

(Our thanks to the ever brilliant Miss Bubbles for doing the live blog – you can read her comments in the previous post)

The show was presented well by Tess Daly (Bruce Forsyth was unwell due to a bout of flu). She backed up admirably by Claudia Winkleman who brought a great sense of fun but what was that rather pointless appearance from Ronnie Corbett all about?

What do you think of the show? Did the right couple get eliminated? Did you feel the Tess-Claudia double act worked? Are you missing Brucie?

Have your say in the comments section below.

My full review of Saturday night’s performances:

We have Tess’ reaction, our view, blogger’s wife’s opinion, a summary of the judges’ views and the scores.

Phil Tufnell and Katya Virshilas – American smooth

Tess: You’re opening the batting. And very dapper you look, Phil.

Our view: Smooth, classy in places. He’s done well there.

Blogger’s wife: Great choice of music and they danced it very well.

Judge Craig: I was a little bit and only marginally disappointed because it wasn’t showy enough. It was cool but I didn’t think it was particularly confident until after the first lift when the timing was good and it became strong til the finish.

Head judge Len: I wasn’t disappointed at all. I see a change of attitude. No more the cheeky charmer, you realise to get anywhere in this competition you have got to up your performance. I thought it was more determined and you did a very good job.

Judge Alesha: You definitely got your swagger back Phil, you are more comfortable in the ballroom. I love the freeness of this dance I think it really suits you. The transitions in and out of the lifts were really well done considering the trouble you have had with your knee. Very smooth and very entertaining.

Judge Bruno: Captain Phil you have the blissful look of someone who just joined the mile high club. Smooth take-off, smooth landing, a bit of turbulence in the middle because you lost timing but you handled it very well.

7 8 8 8 = 31

Ricky Whittle and Natalie Lowe – jive

Tess: Don’t tell me you’ve sustained an injury. That was top gear that jive.

Our view: Fast and furious, certainly. A lot of energy. Too complex for him to do it perfectly.

Blogger’s wife: Although she’s got the body for it she looked like she was dancing in her underwear. The bets jive of the series so far, it really like felt like a jive.

Head judge Len: You are consistent but you are the hunted and everyone’s after you. Austin Healey was in the same position last year. One dance and it’s not quite so good and you’re in the dance-off and you’re out. Keep focused and keep this standard fo dancing.

Judge Alesha: That was a fast jive. Occasionally your timing was out but that was so fast paced you are amazing. It was light-heated, it was cheeky it was pretty amazing.

Judge Bruno: Talk about a tight package full of power. You just go for it. Those kicks and flicks have to be pointed.

Judge Craig: As much as I absolutely loved it, it really did lose technique because of the speed. You were behind a lot of time. The choreography was just stopping a lot of the time.

8 9 9 9 = 35

Ricky Groves and Erin Boag – Viennese waltz

Tess: Everybody’s raising their game tonight.

Our view: He got the character right for this one and has performed the routine better than I expected.

Blogger’s wife: Hair disaster for Erin, it made her look about 50. They danced it very nicely.

Judge Bruno: He made me spin in disbelief but in a good way. I’ve never seen such composure and restraint from you. You kept in time all the way through. You are still a bit tight.

Judge Craig: I really felt as though I couldn’t relax for one moment only because you were very, very tense. You coped very well with all the changing steps you had to do. You do need to smooth out your rise and fall but a really great job.

Head judge Len: All he needs to do to stay out of the dance-off is dance like he’s just done.

Judge Alesha: I’ve seen real improvement Ricky. When you’ve been in a dance-off it knocks you. You did very well and you should be proud of yourself.

7 8 7 7 = 29

Chris Hollins and Ola Jordan – paso.

Tess: Chris come on over. I was loving the paso face

Our view: I don’t like the paso done to modern music. And suddenly along comes along an exception. That was great fun. Of course, you can ask yourself whether a paso should really be fun.

Blogger’s wife: I was a little distracted byu the dsong and wondering if the singer would hit the high notes but I thoroughly enjoyed and want to watch it again

Head judge Len: I nearly pooed me pants when he started, he frightened the life out of me. You came out and really gave it plenty. Craig or Bruno will probably bring it up - you could have been a little firm in the buttocks. I loved the attack of the dance, well done.

Judge Alesha: I love you two. I felt the passion. Chris, your hand is very distracting just close it but I have to say it was intense all the way through, you performed it.

Judge Bruno: That was awful but I liked it. You looked like a child having a tantrum. There was an incredible lack of artistry.

Judge Craig: I feel it had danger, menace, aggression, lots and lots of stamping but you forgot to dance, it was all just placed. It lacked the dignity, honour and the authority that a matador does have.

6 8 9 7 = 30

Laila Rouass and Anton du Beke – rumba

Tess: It was touch and go whether she would dance this week so well done Laila for having a go.

Our view: Oh dear, what a shame. They did some nice moves but she couldn’t finish the routine. Couldn’t they have found a skin coloured bandage?

Blogger’s wife: I’m disappointed in the colour of Laila’s dress. It could have been good if it had been a different colour. I liked the parts they danced.

Judge Craig: Too bad you were concentrating on your injury because there may have been a glimmer of hope in the routine but obviously the pain has got to you. Just on the first part of it I’m going to be marking tonight.

Head judge Len: The rule is that if you get through at least 50% of the dance then we mark it on what we’ve seen and I thought you were getting on really well.

Judge Alesha: You look absolutely beautiful tonight. What you lacked in technique you certainly make up for in heart and passion.

Judge Bruno: Oh, what could have been. It could have been something beautiful. I have to comment on what I saw and that was a dance you couldn’t do justice to.

3 7 6 6 = 22

Natalie Cassidy and Vincent Simone – foxtrot

Tess: A fabulous flowing foxtrot

Our view: Not sure I enjoyed that. Not sure why.

Blogger’s wife: Yet another unflattering dress. Gtrea choice of music. The dance didn’t quite work for me.

Judge Bruno: Very posh, very prim and very proper. You really tried to work on your body contact maybe because of that it lacked a little bit of freedom of movement.

Judge Craig: It didn’t have the flow around the floor but the routine was beautifully simple, it was sweet and honest and smooth.

Head judge Len: That was quality right up my street. Full of magic moments. It could have done with more movement but your best dance as far as I’m concerned.

Judge Alesha: What a dream to watch. I love the song choice. The genuine friendship between you shines through.

8 9 9 8 = 34

Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna – cha cha cha

Brucie: Come one over with your cheeky cha chas.

Our view: One slip up but otherwise well performed.

Blogger’s wife: Finally an Ali hairstyle I like. Dress looked good too. I think she’s finally relaxed in the Latin. Really enjoyed it.

Judge Alesha: Technically very, very good. It’s great to see arms being used correctly in a cha cha. Your cha cha walks were great. You’ve loosened up a lot it was a tad polite but you’ve come out of your shell more.

Judge Bruno: You finish every beat in the arm as it should be. Your hip action is beautiful to look at. You are a nice girl I want a bad, bad girl.

Judge Craig: It was difficult job for Brian because that music didn’t suggest to me cha cha cha. What you did with it choreographically was spectacular. You were a little early on one of those kicks.

Head judge Len: You’re hips are truly hypnotic. I did like it but it was like a Darcy Bussell cha cha cha - you’ve got to be more raunchy. All too airy fairy for me but I liked it.

9 8 9 9 = 35

And for me , the winner of Strictly 2009 is Ricky Groves for leading Erin around the floor in his last "Brokenhearted " dance ! You`ll be missed ,you are what Strictly is all about !!

I think it would help if the Competition Rules for Strictly Come Dancing were more universally known.   If  a doctor rules that a competitor should not dance then they are given a bye for one week only.  That is the rule that was applied in the case of Jade's injury.  If a doctor leaves the decision to dance up to the competitor, as in Laila's case,  and the competitor chooses not to dance then they forfeit their place, that is the rule.  By choosing to try to dance then Laila at least gave herself a chance, if she hadn't done so she would have been out.

For the record, Head Judge Len has the final say because of his knowledge, experience and qualification.  That also is in the rules.  There are few people in the Ballroom Dancing world better qualified than him, let alone in this forum, to judge the competition.  During the dance off, Ricky did dance better than Phil and it was that performance that was being judged - again, this is the rule.   It will be interesting to know what Karen (another world class judge) thinks, she is on It Takes Two's Choreography Corner on Tuesday evening, I hope Claudia asks the question.

At this stage there are no 'bad' dancers left but clearly neither Phil nor Ricky G were seriously expected to win although they have both made admirable progress and provided excellent entertainment.  There are still another couple of celebrities in a similar situation, they aren;t good enough to win but they have done and will continue to do well, providing great entertainment until it is their turn to leave.   That's what it's all about, isn't it?

Geoff, you are absolutely correct in what you say about the so-called music.  I have said it before to no effect, but the prog is called STRICTLY Come Dancing and for proper Ballroom, Latin, Old Time etc you must have the correct musical tempos.  Trying to perform proper dances to todays disco orientated crud makes a total mockery of the idea that you should dance to the music which is perhaps why there are so many poor performances.  Still the happy clappers, Z-list celebs and other hangers on in the audience must have something to do with their hands so as a result, we suffer banality.

This has been such a disatisfied blog this season.  Complaints about everything.
This week, I especially enjoyed Chris Collins' paso doble, Ricky G's Viennese waltz, Ricky W's jive.
I enjoyed the training footage for all the couples - you can see how much effort they are all putting in and the improvement that ALL the celebs have made, and the relationships between celeb & professional.
I enjoyed Claudia backstage and always on ITT.
I enjoyed the breakdancers  (is it called breakdancing - or am I showing my age?)

I still hate the fact that Len gets the deciding vote like I said before because the fact of the matter is, we can at least have some faith in the judges votes being fair but to give one judge more power over the others because they've been in the business longer is not fair! So what if he's been in the business longer? Craig and Bruno are qualified in the knowledge of dancing so their vote should be just as equal and valid but it is belittled simply because they haven't been working in the business as long as Len! What's the point of them bothering to vote if whatever Len says goes?! It's like their votes don't count in the first place! I've hated this deciding vote nonsense from the beginning and I still hate it, it's plain and simply wrong. Like I said there should be 3 or 5 judges to make the dance-off votes fair and valid. Anyways I'm looking ahead to next week now.
6 天以前
It's driving me mad that people can't get their heads around the judges votes. It wasn't 2:1 to Phil and Katya it was 2:2 and then Len decides between the two couples. He's not going to change his mind after casting his original vote, so when it's 2 votes each the couple Len votes for is through. He is the most experienced and fair judge. He is the only judge who's background is vastly ballroom which is what the competition is about, Craig and Bruno have wider experience and I'm still not happy that Alesha is given any say at all in who leaves.

It was really hard to compare the American smooth and V Waltz, there are only 3 steps in the later and it's an incredibly technical dance. I thought Ricky did really well and was consistent in the dance off. Phil lost it when it came to the dance off, he looked a bit like he was messing around didn't really care.

When do they start to do 2 dances? That;s when we really start to see who the winners are.

I agree with Richard. Much as Jade & Ian are regarded by most as "contenders", injured out is -well -  injured out. It's not the first time something other than the lowest score has eliminated somebody from the show (John Sergeant, Kelly Brook to name but two), so surely this counts as the same.  Tuffers, However, was never in danger of straining his bowling ( or is it batting) arm by lifting the Strictly trophy, so if he didn't go this week, the time was still getting close.
And what was Ronnie Corbetts "contribution" all about? Admire him as many of us do, he did himself no favours by "standing in" for Brucie. Tess & Claudia (who we think is a superb, natural, bubbly presenter) coped admirably. You'd better get well soon Brucie, or girl power will prevail.
Finally, how about a sprinkling of  more "traditional" music for the Viennese Waltz, Tango & Passo? Anyone agree?

Here we go again - another strictly fiddle.  Bet in track and field events that if you hurt yourself before the contest, you are out - why then has Jade been given a free ride into next weeks dances.  Probably the same reason why Ms Dixon was foisted on us by the pc/diversity brigade at the BBC.  Tufnell was not very good but had a go and is out, whereas Jade did nothing and is still in.  Stinks to me like last months leotard.

I didnt think Claudia would be any good at all as she is hopeless during the week but I was pleasantly surprised and Tess did very well without Bruce - I think it is about time that he did retire from Strictly- he is not funny any more and the audience are encouraged to applaud but it doesnt work sometimes. I agree, Phil should have stayed on the Show - and Laila shouldnt be there - I also think that the best judge is Craig - he is judging the dancing and he gives constructive criticism - thats whats meant to happen isnt it?  Alesha - well we dont listen to her - her grammar is awful and no constructive criticism - I hope things improve cos I used to really enjoy the programme - we should have a say as we pay the license fee!   Sorry!

Excuse me for being cynical, but before last night's show I had Laila down to be in the dance off - I felt the Rumba was not going to be her dance based on recent performances however, upon spraining her ankle she had a choice of whether to dance or not.  Given that she went ahead and gave it a go, she decided once out there that it wasn't working and broke down in tears - always good for the sympathy vote and of course we at home predicted that she would never be in the dance off because that would have caused far too many problems for the producers of the show.  Anyway, if the doctor said she would be ok to dance why couldn't she have had a painkilling injection prior to her performance?  I would have preferred she didn't dance at all.  Will she perform this dance next week? Although how fair that would be to the other couples I'm not sure, as those who didn't dance this week would in theory have had longer to perfect their dances for next week.  I full sympathise with Jade's position which was unavoidable but I felt the Laila episode was too much of a publicity stunt.  Sorry.

I don't watch the dancing because it's pathetic but I like to watch the scoring just to see what a shambles it all is.  Presumably if Jade is unfit every week between now and the final she'll be able to come back then.

I understand that Len has the final decision cuz he's head judge but to me it was obvious that Phil was better than Ricky on the night. Personally I don't think Phil's a gd dancer and I don't think Ricky Groves is either but Phil's American Smooth was better than Ricky's Viennese Waltz. So I don't no what's up with Len. I was really dissapointed with last night's show. Firstly the couples went down the stairs too quickly when they were introduced.Secondly I know it wasn't Jade or Laila's fault that they were injured but I missed Jade so much and I don't think Laila should have danced at all. I missed Brucie SO much it just wasn't the same without him. But most of all I can't stand Ronnie whatever his name is and he might aswell have mocked the show. I hope next week is better. Much better!

I was somewhat confused by the dance off voting last night. As I understand it, a casting vote is used in the event of a tie. Last night, the votes were clearly 2 for Phil and 1 for Ricky - if Len's vote always counts higher than the others, then why bother asking the others to vote at all? Don't get me wrong, I like Len and I think he is pretty fair, but the system baffles me!
6 天以前
Not that bothered about Phil to be honest. Maybe it's because I don't find him that endearing. Objectively, yes he is an OK dancer but this is the stage in the series where the merely OK dancers get knocked out. Much as I love Ricky G, Chris (Go Team Cola!) etc - it's only a matter of time before they go.

As for Len choosing Ricky - as he said recently on It Takes Two - he marks it on which couple made a mistake and if they both do then he goes on the overall dance. So, as the judges mentioned Phil cocked it up so Len chose him. Simple really. Ricky G kept his nerve and so goes on to next week.

As for injury-gate, I am glad Jade and Laila are both through.  I'm just wondering how serious Jade's knee pop is and whether she will be able to dance for the rest of the series.  Anyone heard anything?

I am very upset that Phil Tufnell went last night  he had musicality and grace and good dancing abilities, this is a big mistake as he was well placed on the leader board. Laila should have been disqualified and left until next wek with Jade. Are the public mad? Because a girl cries that does not mean you have to  vote for her. Who should have gone? The person at the bottom of the leader baord.  The show is so unfair. Anyway well done Phil.

I am very disappointed and feel I have lost all faith in the show. I love dancing and it's been an absolute pleasure to sit back over the years to watch Strictly.
BUT, last night was such a let down. I accept the genuine injury of Jade and agree she should be allowed to dance again, but NO-ONE should have been eliminated last night.
The worse thing about it was that I thought the whole voting was contrived, If Laila had been in the dance off, she would have been unable to perform and so how would have the show filled in the time? Poor Phil is the scapegoat in all this. He is a good dancer and deserved to go further.
I can't believe I'm thinking of switching to X Factor. Len Goodman should be ashamed of himself, he keeps telling us it's a dance competition and then on the dance off voted for the worse dancer. Well done Phil!! you have been great entertainment and I 've voted for you every week.
