The MSN Strictly blog is moving

As usual I shall be covering Strictly Come Dancing 2010 series eight but I will not be doing so on this page.

I will be blogging on MSN’s new blogging platform.

It puts our blogs in the same place as the rest of our site which makes it quicker and simpler to move between our news / feature content and our blogs.

So, as usual, MSN’s Strictly Come Dancing coverage is on MSN TV’s channel and, new for this year, the all new MSN Strictly Come Dancing blog is right alongside it on the MSN TV channel at this url: http://tv.uk.msn.com/blog/strictly-come-dancing.aspx

You’ll be getting all our usual coverage and banter there so hop on over to the new location for the MSN Strictly Come Dancing blog and join in.

Marvellous, as Brucie would say.

And as for this page (the one you’re reading now)…
I won’t be updating this blog much more. My final post will be the celebrity line-up just after midnight.

Know what I mean? Frank Bruno to appear on Strictly 2010?

I do love the Strictly Come Dancing who’s going to be on the show merry-go-round. It’s spinning ever faster now.

Yesterday it was The Sunday Mirror’s turn to report a rumour (or to be fed a tip-off by the show’s PR machine).

It claimed former heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno was being lined up for Strictly Come Dancing 2010.

If anyone’s been on a journey before they even start the show, it has to be good old Frank.

If he does accept the invitation to join series eight (well, he probably already did or didn’t some time ago – the show’s producers surely can’t be leaving it all as late as they did last year?) we wish him well.

Strictly 2010: Felicity Kendal vs Ann Widdecombe

The Daily Mail reports that actress Felicity Kendal has signed up for Strictly Come Dancing 2010.

Series eight of the show will also feature politician Ann Widdecombe as well as rugby star Gavin Henson and actress Patsy Kensit, the Mail says.

The BBC is clearly aiming to sign up higher profile celebrities this season, which is a wise move in my view.

The number of competitors has also been cut from 16 to 14.

The BBC has already announced the 14 professional dancers who will be partnering the celebrities in Strictly Come Dancing series eight. They are:

Artem Chigvintsev, Jared Murillo, Robin Windsor, Anton du Beke, Brendan Cole, James Jordan, Vincent Simone

Ola Jordan, Flavia Cacace, Erin Boag, Kristina Rihanoff, Natalie Lowe, Aliona Vilani, Katya Virshilas

Trivia time
Can you believe that Felicity Kendal is a year older than Ann Widdecombe? Kendal was born in 1946 and Widdecombe came into our world a year later. Well I never.

Brian Fortuna quits Strictly Come Dancing

Strictly Come Dancing’s Brian Fortuna is leaving the television show after changes to the format.
The BBC recruited three new male dancers to the show this year and some of its regulars – including Brian – were instead offered roles in a new professional group which would perform "show-stopping dance spectacles" each week.
The American professional dancer partnered actress Ali Bastian in last year’s series and singer Heather Small in the 2008 show but the shake-up would have seen him removed from the mentoring role.
Brian said he has chosen to leave Strictly and will instead concentrate on the stage show Burn The Floor, where he will retain his partnership with Ali.

Tess Daly hair update, the last one of series seven

Yes it’s the last look at the hairstyles sported by The Tess Daly (she’s everyone’s favourite newspaper) on Strictly Come Dancing series seven.

Saturday 19 December 2009, the grand final. The long ponytail look:

It was maintained in the second show that evening, although there was a dress change:

And here is the hairstyle from the December 25 Christmas Special 2009. A Phil Oakey-esque lop-sided flange arrangement:

OK, that concludes the final Tess Daly hair update of series seven.

Ali and Brian win the Strictly 2009 Christmas special

Actress Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna won the Strictly Come Dancing 2009 Christmas special on December 25.

It was a fun evening of dancing that included some of our favourite performers from previous series.

Here is how the judges scored the performances:

Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna – Viennese waltz
10 10 10 10 = 40

Rachel Stevens and Vincent Simone – rumba
10 10 9 10 = 39

Gethin Jones and Flaiva Cacace – American smooth
9 10 9 10 = 38

Ricky Whittle and Natalie Lowe – quickstep
8 9 10 9 = 36

Austin Healey and Erin Boag – paso doble
9 9 9 9 9 = 36

Chris Hollins and Ola Jordan – foxtrot
8 8 9 8 = 33

Once the studio audience’s votes were tallied and added to the judges’ scores Ali and Brian were declared the winners.

Congratulations to them.

Here’s what the judges had to say about their Viennese waltz:

Bruno Tonioli: “Ali, that was an impeccable Viennese Waltz of supreme beauty, I’m so happy to see you again because it really brings back to me the full intensity of your dancing. You’re superb, you’re a fantastic dancer, technique and artistry all there to be seen. Fabulous.”

Craig Revel Horwood: “I totally agree with all of that actually, stunning, gorgeous and an absolute classic.”

Len Goodman: “I tell you what Ali, you are a stocking filler, you are, you’re Cinderalla, the belle of the ball, absolutely gorgeous.”

Alesha Dixon: ‘"I’ve really missed you two, I mean that was a beautiful dance, a beautiful couple, I feel like you are keeping romance alive and that was just a wonderful Christmas treat, thank you.”

Was it a fair result? Maybe. They danced it very well and blogger’s wife even liked Ali’s dress but for entertainment we both preferred Austin Healey’s paso doble – brilliant.

Chris Hollins Wins Strictly Come Dancing 2009!

Chris Hollins and his dance partner Ola Jordan won Strictly Come Dancing series seven on Saturday night.

After a great evening’s entertainment. Ricky Whittle and his dance partner Natalie Lowe had topped the judges’ leader board with 190 points out of 200 but it was closer than many had expected. Chris was just four points behind with 186.

However, the outcome was based on the viewers’ vote not the judges’ scores and the public voted for the more entertaining couple: Chris and Ola.

So was this the right result? Have your say in the comments section below.

My full review of Saturday night’s performances:
Here is how the evening’s action unfolded.

(Our thanks to the ever bubblicious Miss Bubbles for doing the live blog earlier in the evening – you can read her comments in the previous post)

Below we have Brucie’s reaction, our view, blogger’s wife’s opinion, a summary of the judges’ views and the scores.

Ricky Whittle and Natalie Lowe – quickstep

Brucie: What a start. They are on their feet. What a routine.

Our view: Terrific. He makes it look so easy, doesn’t he? That’s his talent but it is also due to so many hours in the training room. But it is also his Achilles heel. Some of the voting viewers, I think, don’t quite see how brilliant he is and how his performances are the result of so much hard work.

Blogger’s wife: I loved the top half of Natalie’s dress, the bottom half was quite disgusting. They were so light on their feet. However, I wasn’t wowed by it. I can see it was a beautiful dance it just tick the boxes for me.

Judge Darcey: Wow wee, Mr Whittle. That was amazing. You have set the standard for tonight’s’ final. With your athletic frame you have made a hard dance look easy.

Head judge Len:  My expectations were really high. Of all seven series your was the best quickstep from any male celebrity.

Judge Alesha: That was an incredible opening to the show.

Judge Bruno: This was a major league quickstep danced like a champion. Fantastic.

Judge Craig: Polished, slick, very sophisticated, rhythmic. It blew me away, it was spectacular.

10 10 10 10 10 = 50

Chris Hollins and Ola Jordan – foxtrot
Brucie: Are you pleased with him? They’re on their feet again.

Our view: That’s an improvement on their foxtrot in Blackpool. There was even a hint of a smile of his face. Well done.

Blogger’s wife: I loved the choice of music, it was great. And I enjoyed watching it. It wasn’t as good as Ricky’s but I enjoyed it more.

Judge Alesha: You’ve improved so much I want you to really enjoy this moment.

Judge Bruno: I want to congratulate you Ola. You’ve turned a frog into a price. No mistakes, not too many funny faces. What you’ve done is brilliant.

Judge Craig: Timing and footwork is very difficult. Hands are still a problem but for me it was a lot better than Blackpool.

Judge Darcey: You showed the best of your danceability.

Head judge Len:  You’re prince charming. And this foxtrot has travelled well. Top notch in Blackpool, top notch again.

9 9 9 10 9 = 46

Lindy hop
Both couples performed at the same time.

Brucie: Come here, what about it? They should call this show the standing ovation.

Our view: I think Chris might have just nicked that. Good fun, more fun than I was expecting.

Blogger’s wife: I quite enjoyed watching them side-to-side and I didn’t think there was anything in it.

Judge Craig: This is a dance for hobbits. Ricky, the timing of the lifts was good but you did miss that split lift. You did really well in your partnership.

Judge Darcey: Ricky, cleanly executed. It does suit a more compact body but of course always sold brilliantly.

Head judge Len:  Chris, I thought you held your own very well. There wasn’t anything between you.

Judge Alesha: Chris nicely controlled. It was funny, entertaining. It was neck and neck.

Judge Bruno: Chris, you really cracked me up. It was like watching a cheeky frantic monkey I wanted to throw you a banana.

Ricky: 8 8 9 9 9 = 43

Chris: 8 9 9 9 9 = 44

Chris Hollins and Ola Jordan – charleston
Brucie: They’re up again. Just look at them. That is a show stopper.

Our view: That was better than last time. They’ve really raised their game.

Blogger’s wife: It looked like Ola had reused Laila’s charleston outfit which is a shame because I preferred Ola’s from last time. The routine was thoroughly enjoyable. My only regret was that I’d seen it before.

Judge Bruno: Exhilarating, uplifting, exciting. A Strictly Come Dancing classic.

Judge Craig: Quirky, dynamic, animated and actually your mouth being op en so wide really did suit that.

Judge Darcey: You transported me to the golden era of the moves it was brilliant. It was made for you.

Head judge Len:  This is turning into the best final ever. A classic con. The dancer and the entertainer. And that was fantastic entertainment.

Judge Alesha: No time for a comment.

10 10 10 10 10 = 50

Ricky Whittle and Natalie Lowe – cha cha cha

Brucie: Again, what about that?

Our view: Very, very good. They really used the floor. Classy/.

Blogger’s wife: Natalie’s dress looked like the type of thing worn by a teenage girl on a night out. Some great parts to that: cha cha walks were amazing but I still preferred Chris’ dance.

Judge Alesha: Such a sexy couple to watch dance. For me one of the best dances I’ve ever seen on Strictly Come Dancing, you’re in a league of your own.

Judge Bruno: This is dance competition and boy you can dance. Sexy yet cool always in control, you nailed it.

Judge Craig: Still masculine, still sexy and still turned out.

Judge Darcey: I was slightly taken aback myself. You were good last time but this time you were more polished. I wouldn’t mind doing a cha cha with you.

Head judge Len:  No time for a comment.

9 10 9 10 10 = 48

Chris Hollins and Ola Jordan – freestyle show dance
Brucie: What have you done to him? Chris, the Chippendales have just been on the phone.

Our view: Terrific. They’ve done that really well. He did miss his hold with her a couple of times.

Blogger’s wife: An inspired a piece of music had me jumping and clapping form the start. I want to see it from the start.

Judge Darcey: Your timing and technique were perfect. And there was no strain on your face in every lift.

Head judge Len:  They talk about journeys but some people’s journeys have been tougher than others’. Full of enthusiasm, great dance, well done.

Judge Alesha: Your trousers are amazing. Different styles in there. You didn’t disappoint. The song says do you love me the answer is yes

Judge Bruno: Where did you get the strength did you eat spinach for a month. A couple of mishandles the only little fly in the ointment.

Judge Craig: No time for a comment.

[A standing ovation in the Tess pit from the pros and celebs]

9 9 9 10 9 = 46

Ricky Whittle and Natalie Lowe – freestyle show dance

Brucie: That tells you what they thought about it.

Our view: I think that would have looked more spectacular in the studio than it did at home. It was still brilliant.

Blogger’s wife: It was beautifully danced but not as entertaining as I’d have liked.

Head judge Len: Week one I said you’re the one to beat. Week 14 you’re still the one to beat. And you may get beaten tonight but you can go away and know you’re the best dancer.

Judge Alesha: I would have liked to have seen other dance styles but I cant believe how you lifted Natalie. You have been a joy to watch.

Judge Bruno: You have no idea how difficult it is to do a series of lifts like that so easily. It’s fantastic what you’ve achieved. You should be proud.

Judge Craig: Lift-tastic. My jaw was dropping. Incredible. [Len adds’; “I think his head is velcro.”]

Judge Darcey: No time for a comment.

[A standing ovation in the Tess pit from the pros and celebs]

10 9 10 10 10 = 49

The judges’ scores
This is the leader board based on the scores for both performances (out of 50 for each of the four dances, giving a possible total out of 200).

  Chris Ricky
Ballroom 46 50
Lindy hop 44 43
Latin 50 48
Show dance 46 49
TOTAL 186 190

The viewers’ vote

So that left Ricky at the top of the judges’ leader board but the winner would be the one who got more viewer votes.

Once the viewers’ votes were counted the announcement was made: Chris and Ola were champions.

Did you enjoy the final?

Do you agree with the result?

Live blog: Strictly Come Dancing final 2009 week 14 Saturday

Hello all! I’m Miss Bubbles from MSN’s soap blog, A Slice Of Soap. This is it! The Final! Hope you’ve all enjoyed this live blog. This is my last entry. Strictly blogger Matt Ball will follow later with a detailed recap of tonight’s show and he’s also on Twitter so follow him here.

This is a live blog so Press F5 to refresh your screen and keep up with all the latest happenings. Feel free to leave comments at any time throughout the show…

We’re at the end of the series: I can’t believe it. I’ve prepared by listening to Matt’s Strictly podcast and interviews – very good! He’s better than some of the entertainment reporters I’ve heard talking about Strictly.

Anyway, two shows tonight – please also join me for the results show. I’ll be blogging that live from 8.40pm. Somebody’s going to be crowned champion tonight. Question is who? We’ll find out soon…

Show kicks off:

Loud cheers as Brucie appears, full of beans. "Nice to see you, to see you, NICE!" Tess is in a silver knee length dress. She looks like she’s ready to go to a club in Essex rather than dressed for the grand final of Strictly.

Bruce kicks off the show with a joke at Brian Fortuna and Ali Bastian’s expense. He bought them tickets for the hottest show in town – the Strictly final. Groan! A cheesy Match of The Day sequence follows with Gary Lineker and John Motson.

Chris Hollins summed up this night against Ricky Whittle wonderfully: he’s called it the hunk versus the hobbit. Hahaha! They will both perform their best ballroom, Latin, the all-important showdance, but also a lindyhop!

Ricky & Natalie – quickstep

I loved this dance the first time around. Not only did they choose a wonderful song (Down With Love from the movie of the same name that starred Renee Zellweger and Ewan MacGregor), it was beautifully danced. Can they do it again? YES! This is… wow! They move around the floor with conviction and you can see that Ricky is enjoying every moment. This is just Hollywood glamour for a winter’s night.

Judges’ comments: Darcey said: "Wow-eee Mr Whittle! That was amazing. You have set the standard for tonight’s final. You have made a hard dance look easy." Len said "For me, of all seven series, yours was the best quickstep."

Judges’ score: 50! At last Craig Revel Horwood has given Ricky a 10!

Chris & Ola – foxtrot

So lovely to see Chris in the final. Yes, he’s not the best finalist – maybe Ali should’ve been there but the public get what they want. They’re dancing to I Could Have Danced All Night from the movie My Fair Lady. Chris is doing really well and he’s looking quite relaxed for a change. I think this dance really suits him. Ola has very cleverly chosen steps that make him look good.

Judges’ comments:  Darcey said: "You showed the best of your dance ability."

Judges’ score: 46

Past contestants

Martina Hingis, Richard Dunwoody, Rav Wilding, Lynda Bellingham and Joe Calzaghe return to remind us why we voted them all off in the first place.

Martina Hingis and Matthew Cutler rumba to Heart’s How Do I Get You Alone. I still say she went out too early.

Richard Dunwoody and Lilia Kopylova cha cha to Wham’s I’m Your Man. And he still hasn’t gained any rhythm.

Rav Wilding and Aliona Vilani rumba to I Feel Like Crying by Mexicano 777. A handsome man but he still can’t dance.

Lynda Bellingham and Darren Bennett foxtrot to Neil Sedaka’s Calendar Girl. She was such fun – even if her dancing was nothing like Cherie Lunghi’s.

Joe Calzaghe and Kristina Rihanoff (in her striking red material – can’t call it a costume cos it’s too short) jive to Rock This Town by The Stray Cats. The mummy has been unwrapped and he’s back to haunt me!

Lindyhop

I’m really looking forward to seeing this one. A riotous 1940s routine is being performed to Benny Goodman’s Sing, Sing, Sing. What a fantastic addition to the show. Chris is doing very well and… oh goodness! Ricky nearly dropped Natalie!

He’s had to go off stage in order to get back into it! Oh, this could be disastrous for Ricky. There’s hops, jumps, energy, movement and enthusiasm from both of them – Chris is shading it as far as I’m concerned. Bet he has this round.

The judges are praising Chris more than Ricky. Craig says it’s a dance for "hobbits" rather than tall people so it’s one that should suit Chris. Darcey says Ricky and Natalie’s dance was cleanly executed but it is a dance for shorter people.

Len gives Team Cola a special mention. Alesha says Chris was funny and entertaining. Bruno told Chris that he cracked him up. He said it was like watching a "cheeky, frantic, monkey". Looks like it’s 1-1. Here come the scores:

Scores

Judges’ score: Ricky & Natalie: 43

Judges’ total score so far: 93

Judges’ score: Chris and Ola: 44

Judges’ total score so far: 90

A VT rolls with celebs and the public saying who they’re backing. It’s pretty even.

Past contestants

It’s time for more of the stars that got voted off earlier in the competition.

Jo Wood and Brendan Cole do a Viennese waltz to Trouble by Ray LaMontagne and it’s very graceful.

Zoe Lucker and James Jordan do an American smooth to My Girl by The Temptations. No wonder the ozone layer’s in trouble. James has got so much spray in his hair.

Craig Kelly and Flavia Cacace foxtrot to Sometimes When We Touch by Dan Hill and I take my hat off to him for coming back after all the stinging comments that he got.

Oh no! Bruce says we won’t see Phil Tufnell as he’s got flu. However, we are treated to Jade Johnson and Ian Waite’s tango to Duran Duran’s A View To A Kill.  I’m relieved that she’s recovered and her tango was pretty impressive too.

Tess introduces Bruce and Alesha’s turn to grab the spotlight. They’re singing Something’s Gotta Give (looked it up on Bing – originally sung by Frank Sinatra). OH. MY. GOODNESS. How glamorous and gorgeous does Alesha Dixon look? She’s doing a duet with Brucie which smacks of variety of the type you’d see on one of Bruce Forsyth’s shows back in the 1970s or an old Royal Variety Performance.

Bruce’s voice is a bit shaky but he’s over 80 so we can allow that. Alesha definitely holds her own with him as they move to the dance part of their number. Alesha easily keeps up – she won Strictly Come Dancing after all. Hahahah! At the end, Bruce does a Tess and tries to get his leg over Alesha (that will never get old!). He finishes by gently teasing Alesha with a ‘granddad at a wedding’ move of his hips to her song The Boy Does Nothing. Pass the confetti!

We’re back..

Tess has now changed into a strapless black dress with a fan tail thing at the bottom. It’s awful! She looks like a mermaid that got caught in a massive oil slick. A VT rolls of more previous contestants.

Past contestants

Ricky Groves and Erin Boag cha cha to Jump by The Pointer Sisters. He still looks good – he tried very hard.

Natalie Cassidy and Vincent Simone quickstep to Tu Vuo Fa L’Americano made famous by Fiorello. Apart from Chris Hollins, nobody tried harder than Natalie.

Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna Viennese waltz to Do Right Woman, Do Right Man. As they move around the floor, I can’t help wondering ‘what if’? I’m sure she’s thinking the same.

Laila Rouass is absent but "sends her love" says Bruce. OK. Time to return to the celebs and their dancing.

Chris & Ola – charleston

This is my favourite dance of Chris’s. I can’t wait to see it again. Here we go – the music for Fat Sam’s Grand Slam Speakeasy from the movie Bugsy Malone kicks in and Chris and Ola kick off. It is infectious – it’s fun, it’s full of life and verve and it’s very 1920s. Perfect music – perfect routine. Nuff said.

Judges’ comments; Bruno said: "The look on your face at the end when Ola was riding you…" Hahaha! I’ve lost my train of thought now! Darcey said: "You transported me to the golden era of the movies" Len said: "This is turning into the best final ever."

Judges’ score: 50! Well, I expect nothing less. That’s it. I’m going to make a prediction – I think Team Cola are going to upset the favourites and win. Let’s see if I’m right.

Judges’ total score: 140

Ricky & Natalie – cha cha cha

It’s a very slick performance and Ricky is moving around the floor well. He’s also moving his hips very well too – phew! Getting hot in here. However, I must admit, it’s not easy to follow Chris Hollins’ charleston so I don’t feel as enthused although it’s technically pretty good.

Judges’ comments:

Alesha said: "Such a sexy couple! One of the best cha cha chas – you’re in a league of your own." Bruno said: "This is a dance competition… and boy you can dance!" Darcey echoes a lot of women: "I wouldn’t mind doing a cha cha with you!" she says as the crowd ooooohs and aaahhhs!

Judges’ score: 48

Judges total score: 141

Chris & Ola – showdance

Team Cola are channelling the late Patrick Swayze. Their showdance is to Do You Love Me by The Contours which was in the movie Dirty Dancing. It’s a very athletic routine – full of lifts and steps and jumps and lots and lots of hip wiggling. He ends up jumping on the judges table! Bruce jokes that The Chippendales want him.

Haha! I’m really impressed by how far Chris has come. If I’m honest, this didn’t knock me off my feet the way Tom Chambers’ did last year but it’s still wonderful.

Judges’ comments: Darcey said: "That was great partnering. Your timing was perfect. Well done." Len Goodman said: "You’ve got a little split in those trousers!" He goes on to praise Chris for giving all his dances 100%.

Judges’ score: 46

Judges’ total score: 186

Ricky & Natalie – showdance

So here we go. It’s Ricky’s turn. Can he give us a showdance to remember? They’re dancing to The Last Dance by Donna summmer and the routine is choreographed very well. If this is ‘channeling movies’ night for showdances, than this one is reminding me of Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta.

Ricky is definitely technically better than Chris and it is a lovely routine – the lifts are incredible! But the ‘wow factor’ isn’t quite there for me in this showdance either. Tom and Camilla’s showdance was so original – maybe they’ve spoilt us all.

Judges’ comments: Len said: "Week one I said you’re the one to beat, week 14, you’re still the one to beat. And maybe tonight you will be beat. But just go away knowing that you’re the best dancer." Alesha actually echoes my thoughts. She said: "I would’ve liked to see other dance styles thrown in."

Judges’ score: 49

Judges’ total score: 190

We have some dances by the professionals now. Brian and Kristina perform a gorgeous routine to Lady GaGa’s Just Dance. Tess catches up with friends and family of the finalists before we have more professionals hitting the floor, this time with Lisa Snowdon and Rachel Stevens "giving it some welly" (as Len would say) to Sistas Are Doing It For Themselves by Annie Lennox and Aretha Franklin. It’s a great routine!

Tess talks to David Haye, Chris Moyles and Tom Chambers to get their views on the finalists. Much diplomacy but it seems Team Cola has lots of fans. Poor Ricky. He might just lose it despite being the better dancer. A VT of the boys telling us what winning would mean now rolls as we await the announcement.

The result

And… just as I predicted! Chris Hollins has won Strictly Come Dancing 2009! It might be a talent contest but Chris has had the public behind him all the way. Ricky Whittle is very gracious in defeat. I feel a bit sorry for him – but with Ali going out in the semis and Ricky losing tonight, it just goes to show the importance of connecting with the viewers. You can win Strictly even if you’re not the best dancer.

Chris is presented with the glitter ball as Bruce and Tess say their goodbyes. On reflection, I probably won’t remember Chris’s showdance but I will never forget his charleston and for that alone, I don’t mind this win. But what do you think? Is this the right result? Is he a worthy winner?

And that’s a wrap! What did you think of tonight’s show?  We’d love to hear from you so please have your say. That’s it from me, I’m out of here. Join MSN’s Strictly blogger Matt Ball for his full recap of tonight’s show.

Goodnight from Miss Bubbles.
